True Community: The Biblical Practice of Koinonia– Jerry Bridges

Biblical fellowship in New Testament times―or koinonia―had rich and varied meanings, including covenant relationship, partnership in the gospel, communion with God and others, and the sharing of earthly possessions. This book guides you through koinonia and its implications for today’s church. It will help you dig deeper into what the Christian community in the twenty-first century should look like.

Community—and Why We Need It – Arthur Lindsley
Although we can gain the power to love others by our times alone with the Lord, that love is never expressed or stimulated except by being with other people. The context of the community stimulates—provokes—love and good deeds by all kinds of means. Without community (the church), love and good deeds are not provoked or stimulated. Love is in fact impossible in isolation. Love demands another: God or our brothers and sisters.
Do Not Despise the Day of Small Groups: Four Marks of Daring Community – Scott Hubbard
James 5:13-20 lays out a compelling program for small-group life. Yet we know from James’s letter that the community was not enjoying the kind of awakening we see in Acts 2. Class division, bitter tongues, fleshly wisdom, and worldly friendships were compromising the church’s holiness (James 2:1-13; 3:1-18; 4:1-10). Yet even still, James tells them to gather, to sing, to confess, to pray.
A Call to Small Togetherness – John Piper
For believers to do the work of the ministry as the New Testament teaches (Ephesians 4:11-12; Hebrews 3:12-14; Galatians 6:2; James 5:16), we need to gather regularly in smaller forms of togetherness.

Books
Church Membership: How the World Knows Who Represents Jesus – Jonathan Leeman
The picture of membership is a bigger picture than most Christians today realize. It is affirming your belief in Jesus as your Lord and Savior and committing yourself to a local body of believers for growth, nurture, accountability, and discipleship. There are many biblical reasons for membership. This book helps discuss them and the practical reasons to join a local church formally.
Why Should I Join a Church – R.C. Sproul
Many Christians dismiss the need to go to church. It’s just a building, they say. I can worship anywhere. I don’t have to gather with other Christians. This booklet explains that the church is not merely a building—it is the people who meet there. Scripture even commands us to gather, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some (Heb. 10:25). It’s dangerous to attempt the Christian life alone. We need one another to live and worship well.
I Am a Church Member: Discovering the Attitude that Makes the Difference – Thom S. Rainer
What is expected of those who join a body of believers? When a person’s attitude is consistently biblical and healthy, matters of giving, serving, and so forth will fall into place more naturally.

Membership matters more than most people think. If you really want to be a counter-cultural revolutionary, sign up for the membership class, meet with your elders, and join your local church.
Why I Believe in Church Membership – Tim Challies
While I freely admit that the words “church membership” are not found in the pages of the Bible, I am increasingly certain that the concept is. It is there because it is an essential mark of a healthy church and a core practice of a healthy Christian.

Why Church Membership Matters– Tony Merida and Will Basham
Some people think of membership negatively, but the church wants to care for you. We want you to be a part of us, not just some mindless formality. There’s a real spiritual blessing there because you need to use your gifts, and the church needs your gifts. You show that you’re part of the universal church by identifying with a particular local church, the same way you show that you’re spiritually united to Jesus by actually walking with Him.
You Need Biblical Membership – David Platt
Let’s leave church dating behind. Let’s commit ourselves to a local body of Christ. Locking arms together for His glory in the world around us.

Uncomfortable: The Awkward and Essential Challenge of Christian Community – Brett McCracken
It’s easy to dream about the “perfect” church―a church that sings just the right songs set to just the right music before the pastor preaches just the right sermon to a room filled with just the right mix of people who happen to agree with you on just about everything.
Chances are, your church doesn’t quite look like that. But what if instead of searching for a church that makes us comfortable, we learned to love our church, even when it’s challenging? What if some of the discomfort that we often experience is good for us?
Why Nobody Wants to Go to Church Anymore– Thom and Joani Schultz
This book helps you change the way you think about church. It begins by embracing four simple acts of love: Radical hospitality, Fearless conversation, Genuine humility, and Divine anticipation.

Does the Bible Say Anything About Going to Church? – Caleb Davis
The word “church” means “assembly”. God has been and is still assembling His people from all nations. But He is not just assembling them in the abstract. He is assembling them weekly, physically, in actual places with specific practices of worship, renewal, and preaching.
Why Should I go to Church? – Paul Levy
God has promised that as His church gathers together, He will bless them in a way that is distinct from when they are on their own. Jesus promises that when two or three are gathered in His name, He is in the midst of them (Matt. 18:19–20). The Apostle Paul, speaking of when the outsider comes into worship, says that our prayer should be that he realizes what is always true: “God is really among you” (1 Cor. 14:25).
Don’t Let Yourself be cured of Churchgoing – Mia Staub
In all this, I want to remind those suffering from church homelessness—especially my fellow young adults and single people—that you are not alone. More than that, you don’t have to be content with this loneliness. You can be resilient and find the family God has promised you.

Why Is It Important to Go to Church in Person? – J.D. Greear
“Don’t neglect to meet together.” That comes from Hebrews chapter 10. The author doesn’t say, “Meet together so you can hear the sermon,” or “to sing together;” he puts the emphasis on meeting together so that we can stir up one another. So, worship is not just about receiving or about listening and hearing. But, what are you giving in corporate worship? How are you contributing to the family of faith if you’re not there in person? You can’t do those things — at least not at the same level — if you’re tuning in from home.

What are Biblical Hyperlinks? – Tim Davis
Go on Wikipedia. You’ll see blue words that are underlined. Click one and it will take you to a new page. Here’s what’s cool.
The Bible works similarly. It is a very “Hyperlinked” book. In other words, the authors frequently “link” their readers to other parts of Scripture. And they do this intentionally. So, if you want to deepen your Bible reading skills, it’s worthwhile to learn the hyperlink.
I’ve Heard it Said the Gospels are Full of Contradictions – Peter J. Williams
We’ve got four sources about Jesus—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—and whenever you’ve got multiple sources about anything (any event), there are going to be differences, and often significant differences, of emphasis. But as a further element, I think Jesus, as a teacher, used paradox—that is, sometimes he used statements that appear contrary.

What Constitutes Christian Maturity? – J. Oswald Sanders
Maturity is not the end we have achieved. We are to keep on growing and progressing.
The supreme goal of the church is not evangelism, important and indispensable as that ministry is. The goal is stated by Paul when he wrote: “We proclaim him, teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect [mature] in Christ” (Col. 1:28, italics mine).
How Do We Become Spiritually Mature? – John MacArthur
MacArthur writes, we know that sanctification is a divine work through the Word by the Spirit of truth. So, we must plead with the Spirit that He would mold and shape us into the image of Christ, through the truth, from one level of glory to the next. As the Apostle Paul explains, “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit” (2 Cor. 3:18).
Don’t Give Up on Changing– Chip Ingram
Why don’t we change? What is the barrier, the missing piece, the gap in our understanding? I believe one of the key reasons is this: spiritual isolation.

Spiritual Maturity and the Seduction of Sin – Russell Moore
Moore addresses four questions that arise from Genesis 3:1–13 that serve as a warning for all who lead others to faith in Christ, disciple them, and teach them the Word of God. The questions posed are:
- Who are you (are you tempted to think of yourself higher or lower than you ought)?
- What do you want (does it align with God’s desires)?
- Where are you going (do you live with an understanding of the coming judgment)?
- What have you done (are you allowing your sin to be exposed in order to overcome it)?
“If you and I are discipling people, leading people to faith in Christ, and leading people in the Word of God,” he says, “we must understand what it means to wrestle, not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers in the heavenly places—which means we have to understand the nature of temptation as it intersects with discipleship.”
Growing to Spiritual Maturity (Part 1) – Ron Bennett
Often times in our Christian culture, we look more at discipleship as an ‘event’ or ‘course’ rather than a lifestyle that will consume us for the rest of our life. So, I have concluded that my journey for the rest of my life is to pursue those three aspects:
- to know Christ in an ever-deeper way
- to reflect Christ as He transforms me more to look like Him
- to share Christ in whatever ways I can to expand the Kingdom.
And those are not places I’ll arrive, but direction I’m headed. So, in that sense, ‘maturity’ is simply an on-going process of going deeper in understanding and going through those three things”
Growing in Spiritual Maturity (Part 2) – Ron Bennett
I think ‘success’ is when people learn how to go to the Scripture, feed themselves from Scripture, never becoming self-reliant, but becoming interdependent on the Body.
