Something special happens when followers of Jesus and spiritual seekers gather together in community. Jesus said, “Where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them” (Matt. 18:20). Followers of Jesus experienced the power of community in the first century. The witness of Christian community influenced secular society and God began to move. Scripture says, “And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2:47).
The apostle Paul compared the church to a body, explaining that every piece and part is meaningful (1 Cor. 12:12-31). As the body gathers together in community, the gifts of every person are valuable. In fact, the author of the book of Hebrews encourages believers to find ways to “spur one another on to good deeds” and to “not give up meeting together” (Heb. 10:24-25).
The Bible recounts the power and importance of meeting with other believers on a regular basis. Gathering together in community reminds every Christian that they’re not alone in the battles of life. It also serves as a witness to the surrounding society that God is active in the world. God begins to move as followers of Jesus gather and use their gifts to serve each other and the world.
